#208 - Beyond The Veil: Children's Journeys Through Near-Death Experiences

In this profoundly enlightening episode of "Interviews with Innocence," we are honored to host Dr. P.M.H. Atwater, L.H.D., an internationally recognized authority on near-death experiences (NDEs). With a career spanning over 38 years, Dr. Atwater has dedicated her life to researching NDEs, fueled by her personal survival of three near-death episodes. Through her journey, she has authored 18 books, with “The Forever Angels: Near Death Experiences in Childhood and Their Lifelong Impact” being among her most recent and impactful works.

Dr. Atwater's extensive research, which includes interviewing over 5000 individuals from young children who have had NDEs to older adults reflecting on their lifelong impact, brings forth a compelling argument: the near-death experience is a profound consciousness transformation or “brain shift,” rather than an anomaly. This episode delves into how children, in particular, perceive and articulate their encounters with the divine, and how these experiences shape their understanding of life and existence.

Key Insights from Dr. P.M.H. Atwater:

  • Childhood NDEs: Children's interpretations of near-death experiences diverge significantly from adults'. They often report encountering three distinct lights, a fatherly figure, and various animals and birds, illuminating a unique perspective on the afterlife.

  • Communication Post-NDE: The importance of engaging with children on their level post-NDE to foster genuine and uninhibited conversations. Dr. Atwater emphasizes the significance of eye-level interaction to avoid influencing children to speak merely to please adults.

  • Challenges of Reintegration: The struggle many children face reintegrating into "real life" post-NDE, driven by a profound sense of not being understood and a yearning to return to the light they experienced.

  • Ongoing Life Stream: Dr. Atwater's research suggests that what we often conceptualize as the afterlife is, in fact, part of an ongoing life stream, challenging traditional perceptions of life and death.

  • Phenomena of Protection: An intriguing account of children in a devastating tornado in Missouri who were reportedly saved by "butterfly people," raising questions about angelic interventions.

  • Supporting Children with NDEs: The episode emphasizes the importance of allowing children to express their experiences freely through conversation, prayer, rituals, and the creation of personal altars or centerpieces.

  • Respecting Children's Truths: Acknowledging and honoring the truth in children's descriptions of their experiences without judgment, and the importance of letting children be children.

  • Personal Growth: Dr. Atwater shares her personal takeaway from her extensive research and experiences: a profound ease and trust in navigating life, even in the most daunting situations.

#203 The Mountains, Massage and Healing With Teresa Frank

Teresa is a Journeywoman of the sacred. Her life has been filled with a deep curiosity and desire to re-member herself and others back to wholeness.  Through study, story, time with nature, ritual and practice she has braided a basket of tools that she pulls from in her work as an ordained Minister of Walking Prayer with the Center for Sacred Studies and her almost 2 decades as an integrative bodyworker. As a mother and householder, she utilizes her tools of daily and seasonal ritual to bring her back into the magic and luminosity of the ‘ordinary’. As long as she takes breath, her basket will continue to grow, as will her desire to assist in bringing people deeper into their whole heart.

In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Teresa Frank as she shares her fascinating spiritual journey. She delves into the significance of rituals and ceremonies that played a pivotal role in establishing a deep spiritual bond with the divine. Teresa's exploration of various healing modalities, coupled with transformative spiritual encounters, unveiled the healer within her. This self-discovery has inspired her to initiate her own practice, where she provides energy body work to assist clients in navigating their inner worlds.

#195 Reclaiming Innocence by Embracing the Golden Rule With Rev. Carol Saunders

Rev. Carol Saunders bio:

For those who are curious, here is a brief synopsis of who I am. Like many life roads, mine has been one of interesting turns, ultimately bringing me to today. My educational background is in engineering. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and worked for 20 years in the energy business in Houston, Texas. I always admired the perfection of mathematics and the discovery of science, but the engineering field didn’t entirely suit me. As a young adult I found myself exploring all sorts of interesting endeavors on my own and eventually awakened to the Unity movement in 1997.

I am a Licensed Unity teacher, an ordained Interfaith minister and ordained Unity minister. After founding and leading a church for seven years, Spirit guided me to create something completely new. Together with those who were journeying with me, we boldly threw out the church model and focused on creating an alternative to church that included the message, the world and God in the midst. That was the start of The Spiritual Forum. In 134 episodes covering a broad spectrum of spiritual topics, we brought our authentic dialogue on spiritual living to the world via podcast.

Guided again by Spirit in 2021, I shifted The Spiritual Forum to a new format — conversations on spiritual living with guests. These are interesting conversations about personal experiences of the Divine, transformation and healing (including shadow work), the spiritual nature of world events, Ahimsa, and the great awakening of humanity from layers of programming and cultural conditioning. Ultimately, I hope they inspire people to seek/continue their own healing/awakening path and bring hope to the world. Also in 2021, I began leading an annual Whole Planet Spirituality Forum & Retreat at Unity Village.

On the personal side, I have been married to my husband, Greg Harbaugh, since 1981 and together we have three adult daughters. Greg is a former NASA shuttle astronaut which provided our family so many interesting life experiences. He has supported me fully in every one of my life endeavors, from getting my pilot’s license to bringing home puppies and stray cats/kittens to starting new ministries. We enjoy our home and property in rural Wisconsin, particularly the ever changing wildlife and our menagerie of dogs and cats. I also have a blog site – wolfandthelamb.com – to awaken the spiritually minded to include ALL sentient beings in our circle of Compassion.

As a minister and co-creator with Spirit, I have experienced the joy of authentic creativity and the honor of making a profound difference in people’s lives. I have learned to love and forgive myself, to trust Spirit, and to look for the Good always as I venture toward the complete unfoldment of my humanity and divinity.

In this unique episode featuring Rev. Carol Saunders, we delve into the topic of dismantling the cultural influences that can sometimes alienate us from our inherent innocence. We explore the path to reclaiming this innocence by embracing the practice of the golden rule: treating others as we would like to be treated. Carol explains that by embracing this principle, we can discover the art of transforming all energy into love.

Atwater, L.H.D. is one of the original researchers in the field of near-death studies, having begun her work in 1978.  She has written fifteen books on her findings - the last, "Near-Death Experiences: The Rest of the Story," a wrap-up of her near-death findings along with her theory about transformations of consciousness - covering 43 years of work both with near-death experiencers and those who had an intense spiritual transformation (covering nearly 7,000 child and adult experiencers).  Some of her findings in the near-death field have been verified in clinical studies, among them the prospective study done in Holland and published in Lancet Medical Journal, 12-15-01.  Her "The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences," brought the entire field of near-death studies uptodate worldwide, and was featured in an online version of Newsweek Magazine.  Her latest, Dying to Know You:  Proof of God in the Near-Death Experience, is a summary of experiencer voices speaking their word, their truth, what they learned.

In 2005, she was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the International Association For Near-Death Studies (IANDS), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists (NATH), as well as an honorary Ph.D. from a school in Sri Lanka.  In 2010, she was also awarded the Nancy E. Also a generational researcher, she has completed “Children of the Fifth World:  A Guide to the Coming Changes in Human Consciousness (due out in Fall, 2012), “Beyond the Indigo Children," and “The New Children and Near-Death Experiences.  Her story as an experiencer of near-death states - I Died Three Times in 1977 - The Complete Story - is available at Amazon.com.  A prayer chaplin, visionary counselor, wife, mother, grandmother, her website is filled with many services and features, among them The Marketplace - where near-death experiencers and those like them can promote their products and services without any charge to them.  Her monthly newsletters are free to those who sign up on www.pmhatwater.com

In today's episode, I am thrilled to welcome the renowned PMH Atwater once again to the show, where she will discuss her latest book centered around her life story. In her eloquent narrative, PMH artfully weaves together her personal journey, abundant experiences, and their profound impact on her life. She also generously imparts the wisdom she has acquired through over four decades of diligent research, which encompasses an impressive corpus of more than 4,000 client sessions.

A vast majority (of NDEers) never lose their sense of home.”

”They really are different because their brains formed differently.”

”They’re bringing that knowledge and openness with them.

#180 Sacred Rituals to Celebrate Young Hearts

On today’s episode, I am very excited to be announcing my new sacred rituals project. I define a ritual as a sacred space or ceremony where joys, fears, and feelings are shared, validated, and embraced using spiritual tools to open the heart and create a sense of belonging, connection, and feeling heard, understood, and loved. A ritual is a celebration of our spiritual lives. Rituals are intended to resonate deeply with the participants, bringing strength and love to carry through life, particularly during challenging times. Used within a family, a ritual can create a sacred and enduring bond.

#179 Part 2: The Spiritual Lives of Children With Kate Adams

Kate Adams PhD is an internationally recognized researcher of children’s spirituality. She spent a decade teaching children, where she was deeply inspired by the insights they shared. Their narratives led her to a path of discovery about children’s spiritual worlds, initially through her PhD, which delved into children’s dreams in sleep which they believed had a divine connection. She has explored a range of spiritual aspects of young people’s lives, and her current project focuses on adults’ memories of their childhood imaginary/invisible friends. Throughout her studies, children have often explained that their spiritual experiences and wonderings are regularly dismissed as imagination, or simply ignored. Kate’s work gives voice to them, to help adults understand young people’s inner worlds and appreciate the wisdom they offer us.

Kate is a Professor of Education in the UK and has published widely on the subject for over two decades through research papers, articles, and books including Unseen Worlds: Looking through the lens of childhood, and The Spiritual Dimension of Childhood. She has served on the Board of Directors for the International Association for the Study of Dreams and as Co-Chair of the International Association for Children’s Spirituality. Kate regularly gives talks on her research around the world, for a range of audiences, all with the aim of bringing children’s experiences into the light.

In this episode, Kate and I engage in a delightful discussion regarding her captivating research on the spiritual experiences of children and the valuable insights that can be gained from their perspectives.

#177 Connecting with Animals: A Holistic Approach to Animal Care with Rommie Buhler

Rommie is passionate about animal welfare and is driven to change the perceptions around how we can communicate with them so they can be more consciously looked after. Most people that have animals in their care, while very connected to them, are only seeing part of their health and wellbeing picture. Mostly through what they observe, what they think and the things they may already know, but when you communicate from a higher perspective and you have a conversation with them, you are able to see the whole picture. That means, you are able to support them in a way “they” need, not in a way we think they need as you see the truth behind behaviours, psychological and physical problems. She works globally, but lives on the east coast of Australia as an Animal Communicator, Missing Animals Investigator, Medical Intuitive and Animal Energy Healer. Rommie also runs online and in person courses in Animal Communication, Missing Animals Investigation and Intuitive Development. She is also the TV Show Host of the web TV show, the ANIMALS’ TELEVISION show. A show designed to be educational, inspiring and entertaining to help the welfare of all animals domestic and wild. The Executive Producer of one of Australia’s premier FM Breakfast Radio stations has described her as “too normal”. She’s pragmatic, no nonsense and logical and has been told many times, “you don’t look like an intuitive”. She takes that as a compliment! Challenging the stigma associated with that innate ability we are born with--Intuition, is a constant part of Rommie's conversation. Rommie has been trained with some of the top psychic mediums, controlled remote viewers and intuitive detectives around: Tony Stockwell, Pam Coronado, James Van Praagh and Amanda De Warren.

During this episode, Rommie shares with us her unique perspective on animal communication and how it can help us understand the whole picture of our pet’s well-being. We discuss the importance of connecting with an animal's true essence and how owners’ behaviors can affect their pet’s emotional welfare.

Somer taught Nursery and Kindergarten at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School for 15 years before leading the Parent Child Program there. In 2020 she started her own program mentoring parents and teaching outdoor parent-child classes on the campuses of Hawthorne Valley School and Berkshire Waldorf School. Somer’s two daughters are Waldorf Graduates. Somer is the assistant program director and a faculty member at Sound Circle Center for Arts and Anthroposophy and is a Northeast Regional Representative for WECAN. She serves as a mentor for teachers and schools as well as an inspirational coach for parents. She leads workshops and parent education opportunities around the country. Somer enjoys skiing, biodynamic gardening, cooking, puppetry, singing, purposeful work with children and creating healing stories for children and parents.

During this episode, I have a lovely conversation with Somer Serpe regarding the Waldorf school's educational approach, which aims to develop essential qualities in children that encourage them to become resilient and compassionate individuals.
